As I often do: Move the conclusion to the top after I have reached it: How to sell slavery to slaves for profit. That is what self driving cars is all about. It is like selling the death and destruction of war to the public. There is huge profit in it. It simply takes the business model and changes the overt marketing angle to one of saving lives and property destruction.
Simple manipiulation. As easy as getting imbeciles elected for private profit.

Just a link of minor importance to the idea of self driving cars but an important indicator of the social problem involved in "engineering society". That is the primary challenge of self driving cars, not the development of AI technology and systems to put self driving cars on the road.
Making the world safe for self driving cars to make the world safer for people? A noble objective applying technology to the problem of death and destruction on the road. If everyone drove with the same algorithm that AI is applying to the design of a self driving car systems then there would be no real need for self driving cars.
The problem is that government cannot control the people it governs to the extent that they will all drive like an AI controlled car. Attempts to do that will meet not only with resistance but rebellion. It is on a level solving the gun problem by taking away guns from the hands of the public. It is taking away the steering wheel to solve the problem.
The automobile industry started at the beginning of the 20th century has made a lot of money for a lot of people in the Industrial Age. Money made on the " hardware" thing we drive. The 21st century is the Information Age. An equal amount of money is going to be made on the software side of the thing called an automobile replacing the not only the "software" control resident in the heads of 20th century drivers but the entire hardware and related vehicle driving controlling systems of the 20th century.
20th century vehicle control driving systems? It is a legacy system from a previous century to which technology was increasingly applied throughout the century to the physical system of roads and supporting infastructure related to the automobile that extended to an entire business industry of goods and services as well as regulatory control. Regulatory control from control of the driver behind the wheel to private and public regulatory control of things related to the auto industry.
The hardware and broad hardware/software infrastructure of the auto industry has reached "peak control. The last thing left to control for the purpose of business profit is not the automobile but the driver.
It is ironic that the fundamental focus of AI controlled self driving cars is the profit to be made by controlling the driver of the vehicle! The challenge is not so much the hardware and software to control a car but the creation and establishment of social controls applied to the public that result in profit to business that create the social controls.
What are those business sectors? Insurance for example. Privatized government functions for example related to transportation systems such as the collection of gas taxes by states. That function to be replaced by a revenue stream managed by private enterprise based on miles driven to fund the transportation system as well as fund profit to business enterprise that performs this function, extracts its fee and passes what is left to state and federal government agencies with a business model of progressively taking over all the functions of those agencies.
The big problem facing the new auto "Information Age" business model is how to get the public to "buy" this new model!
Marketing of course. Better and new! Better for you!
Marketing has reached peak marketing when it can successfully sell slavery. People become slaves to an extraction system,
How to manipulate people? Make them dependent on things they cannot do without.
Make people dependent on their manipulated needs by shaping those needs. Emotional as well as physical dependence. The most efficient manipulation is to induce a cat to skin itself for the benefit of an entity that does not have to skin it to get the benefit.
