I returned yesterday from a month long trip to Europe mentioned in the previous post.
The last stop was Iceland for 4 days. A bleak place with some exceptional places and high prices for food. Could've, should've skipped it. My friend what to see the Northern Lights. Fat chance. Go out on an bus from 10 to 3am. Someone that did said they saw them for a couple minutes. Not see them? Free bus tour the next night.
Leaving Iceland I was directed to a special screening area after going through the usual first one. A person was checking boarding passes before going to the gate. Checked mine and said that my name was on an airline list of special security checks.
I was directed to a side area. My bags were unpacked on a table. Everything opened looked at and many things swabbed. Total body pat down by Icelandic authorities. I passed.
Non stop to Seattle. Go through arrival screening and the same thing. The screener said that Icelandic Air requested it. Said it many times as the explanation for why it was being done. All bags unpacked again. Everything looked at and swabbed. Exceptionally thorough pat down.
Why me?
Look at the blog entry at the top. I often comment about security matters. Maybe there is a connection?
The upside: Somebody reads my posts! Not really somebody but an NSA computer program probably generating an automatic list. Security check at both ends out of fear that Iceland authorities did not do a good job? CYA, just in case?
